This course focuses on the basics of Wilderness Medicine. Learners will be instructed on evaluating the outdoor environment, preparing for wilderness excursions, packing personal items, and building a first aid kit. This course takes a deeper dive int ofirst aid including learning about the environment and plants that are safe and unsafe to use for the purposes of eating or medicine. 

This course is taken alongside Wilderness Medicine Practical Skills. Wilderness Medicine Practical Skills is a lab, converting classroom learning to a hands-on-approach. 

First Aid, Public Health, and Health Promotions are three separate courses ranging from: how to help a person at the time of distress, how to read figures and infection prevention techniques, and the fundamentals of what makes one healthy. 

These courses offer the fundamentals of research specific to each student, a practical component through CITI research training, the principles of upholding academic standards and maintaining the integrity of data, as well as the principles for responsible research and protection of research participants.

The Foundation Leadership course focuses on theoretical and conceptual models of leadership and how each could be applied effectively. Our peer leadership program emphasizes values of commitment, faith (in the process), hope, and charity (in the service of others) to ensure well rounded leaders of today and tomorrow. 

In Effective Communication students learn and apply communication techniques to be used via written communication and in-person to then be applied in clinical and outdoor simulations. 

This course is both direct teaching and later hands on focusing on the culture and history behind Bonsai and the practical health benefits through the examination and later application of skill.

The function of major body systems is reviewed and instructed on an anatomical basis. This course utilizes interactive technology.

In Infectious Disease students will be expected to apply their learnings in Anatomy to understanding the course for treating ill-individuals and learning methods to prevent transmission of infectious diseases. 

The course will review the content covered in Fundamentals’ Wilderness Medicine at a fast pace, to move on to scenarios with greater complexity. The course will enlighten learners to a new topic:  Missionary Medicine and topics important to staying healthy during missionary work (safe drinking water, prevention of vector-transmitted disease). The learners will apply knowledge to skills learned in this course during a separate Wilderness Medicine Clinical Skills  course offered to intermediate learners.

Along with direct teaching methods this course is alongside a practicum and clinical skills lab to apply the knowledge that learners have been instructed upon. 

This course teaches the learner the types of study design and the application of the outcomes from each study reviewed, based on the design.  The course briefly reviews descriptive and inferential statistics and data, and teaches what questions may be answered by data based on the design of the medical research study reviewed.  The course is led by a clinical researcher who has been published in scientific journals.

This course focuses on interpreting findings from a variety of research studies published in the scientific literature.  Learners will be instructed on how to interpret and apply findings to individual and human populations.

 This course focuses on alternatives to traditional medicine, and will present learners with strategies to manage common conditions using supplements and plant-based treatments.  The course is instructed by two practicing board-certified and licensed clinicians (nurse practitioner and MD) and supplemented by a peer leader, offering an opportunity for peer leadership application and interaction.  All content is reviewed and approved by the program administrators.

'Meditation' reviews different cultural aspects of meditation as well as the application of different styles of meditation.  This hybrid course includes components of group learning and practice of meditation at both an individual and group style.

'Imagery' is led by a professional educated and trained on imagery who currently uses imagery in clinical practice. This course is taken along with meditation to understand similar concepts explored in both courses.

This flexible course permits learners with “working time” to work on a research or capstone project that is a part of the Gifted Pathfinder HSE.  Learners are encouraged to develop an idea for an article or project to submit to a literary or scientific publication (local or national) or a science fair or conference and instructors are available to guide the learner during this time.
